A scratch on a prestige car is never just a scratch. It is a mark on something you chose deliberately, paid a premium for, and expect to hold its value. So when you start looking into car scratch repair for a BMW, a Porsche, a Bentley or a Tesla, the advice you find online can be frustrating. Most of it is written for a commodity hatchback: buff it out, touch it up, done.
That advice is not wrong for those cars. It is simply the wrong process for yours. A modern luxury finish is a multi-layer system built to tolerances measured in microns, often using pearl, tri-coat or matte technology that behaves nothing like a solid single-stage colour. Repair it as though it were ordinary paint and the damage moves from visible to permanent.
This guide walks through how a specialist actually approaches the job: what gets measured before anything is touched, why a luxury finish resists spot repair, and what the manufacturer-approved refinish stages involve. The goal is not to talk you out of a small repair. It is to show you what a proper one looks like, so you can tell the difference when you are choosing who does it.
Why a Prestige Finish Is a Different Repair Problem
Factory paint on any modern car is a layered structure: an electrocoat corrosion layer, primer, the colour or base coat, and a clear coat that provides gloss and UV protection. On a prestige vehicle, that structure is usually more complex, and every layer is doing more work.
Three things make the difference:
- Effect pigments: metallic flake, mica and pearl pigments do not just sit in the paint, they orient in it. The angle those flakes settle at during spraying determines how the panel reads in daylight. Two panels with identical paint codes can look mismatched if the flake lands differently.
- Multi-stage systems: tri-coat and candy finishes build colour across several transparent passes. The final appearance depends on how many coats went on and how heavily, not just what was mixed.
- Matte and satin clear coats: these cannot be polished. Polishing is what creates gloss, which is precisely the thing a matte finish is not meant to have. A repair that works perfectly on a gloss panel destroys a matte one.
On top of that, prestige bodies increasingly mix substrates. Aluminium bonnets, carbon fibre aero panels and composite bumpers all take paint differently and expand differently under heat. That matters enormously once a bake cycle is involved.
Step One: Measuring, Not Guessing
The first thing a specialist does with a scratched prestige panel is not pick up a polisher. It is to measure how much paint is actually there.
A paint depth gauge reads total film build in microns. Factory paint on most vehicles falls somewhere in the range of 100 to 180 microns in total, with the clear coat itself only around 35 to 50 microns. To put that in perspective, the layer protecting your colour is roughly half the thickness of a human hair.
That single reading tells a technician several things at once.
How much material is available to work with
Correcting a scratch by machine means removing clear coat until the surrounding surface is level with the base of the scratch. That material does not come back. Industry guidance is that no more than around 8 microns of clear coat should ever be removed, because beyond that the remaining film can no longer protect the colour underneath from UV degradation. A panel that has been aggressively polished twice before may have nothing left to give.
Whether the panel is original
Readings well above the factory range usually mean the panel has been painted before. Readings the gauge cannot resolve at all often indicate body filler underneath. On a car you are buying, holding as an investment, or preparing to sell, that is information worth having regardless of the scratch.
Where the scratch actually stops
Depth gauging alongside inspection under colour-correct lighting establishes whether the damage is confined to clear coat, has broken into the base coat, or has reached primer or bare metal. Each of those is a different job with a different cost and a different consequence for the panel’s warranty.
This is the step most volume repairers skip, and it is the reason a “quick” scratch repair can quietly cost you a panel.
Why a Luxury Finish Can’t Be Spot-Repaired Like a Commodity Car
Assume the measurement comes back and the scratch is too deep to polish out. On an ordinary car, the next move is often a localised spot repair: sand the area, spray colour over it, clear the patch, blend the edges. Done well, on solid white or black, it can be genuinely invisible.
On a prestige finish, that approach usually fails for two reasons.
The colour is not simply a code
A paint code identifies a formula, not a result. Manufacturers issue multiple approved variants of the same code across production batches and plants, and paint changes over years of UV exposure. A four-year-old Audi in Daytona Grey is not the colour that left Ingolstadt.
Specialist workshops resolve this with a spectrophotometer, which reads the actual panel at multiple angles and returns the closest matching variant from a digital mixing bank. That reading is then verified on a sprayout card under the same lighting the finished panel will be judged in. This is standard practice in luxury paint refinishing and it is not optional on effect colours.
Blending has to respect where a panel ends
Even with a perfect match in the gun, a hard edge between new and original paint on a metallic panel will show. The fix is blending: the new colour is faded out across the panel and the clear coat is then carried to a natural boundary, typically a body line, a panel edge or an adjacent panel.
That is why an honest quote for a scratch on a rear quarter may cover two panels. It is not upselling. It is the only way to place the transition somewhere your eye will not find it. A repairer who promises to spot-repair a pearl white quarter panel in the middle of the panel is telling you something useful about their standards.
The Manufacturer-Approved Refinish Stages
Once the method is set, a factory-standard refinish follows a defined sequence. Manufacturer-approved workshops are audited against it, and the paint system itself is part of the approval. Premium refinish systems such as Glasurit from BASF are specified by manufacturers precisely because their performance is documented and repeatable; BASF reports that its current Glasurit 100 Line runs at under 250 grams per litre of VOC and is in use across more than 1,000 body shops in 20 countries.
The stages look like this:
- Assessment and colour reading. Depth gauging, damage mapping and spectrophotometer analysis, cross-checked against the vehicle’s build data.
- Method planning. Deciding the repair boundary, the blend panels, the substrate-specific process and whether adjacent systems such as sensors or cameras are affected.
- Preparation and masking. Feather-edging the damage, applying the correct primer for the substrate, and protecting trim, glass and, on electric vehicles, high-voltage components and battery zones.
- Application. Base coat applied in controlled passes to reproduce the original flake orientation, followed by the approved clear coat, in a sealed and filtered booth.
- Bake and cure. A calibrated bake cycle brings the finish to full hardness. Temperature limits here are substrate-specific, which is why aluminium, carbon fibre and EV panels each carry their own parameters.
- Correction and polishing. Wet-flatting and multi-stage machine polishing bring the new clear coat to the same gloss level as the untouched paint around it, verified with gloss measurement rather than by eye.
- Quality control. Inspection under colour-correct lighting from multiple angles, final depth readings, and a documented handover.
If the scratched panel carries a radar sensor, camera or parking sensor, there is an additional step. Refinishing over or near those components changes how they see the road, and the affected systems need ADAS calibration afterwards. Skipping it leaves a car that looks perfect and no longer brakes when it should.
What a Poor Repair Costs You Later
The financial argument for doing this properly is not sentimental. It shows up in three places.
Resale and valuation. Prestige buyers and dealers check panels. Paint depth readings outside factory range, a colour mismatch that appears in certain light, or overspray on adjacent trim all reduce what a car achieves, and they cannot be undone by a later repair.
Warranty and corrosion protection. Manufacturer paint and corrosion warranties depend on approved materials and approved processes. Non-approved parts or a non-approved refinish can compromise that cover. This is one of several reasons genuine parts matter on European vehicles, and why OEM authorisation is worth checking rather than assuming.
The repair you have to do twice. Clear coat removed in a bad polish is gone. A panel that was polishable in year three may need a full refinish in year five because someone took 20 microns off it with a rotary and a coarse compound.
Choosing a Specialist for Car Scratch Repair
If you are comparing workshops, the useful questions are specific ones.
- Do you measure paint depth before quoting? If the answer is no, the quote is a guess.
- Are you authorised by my vehicle’s manufacturer? Authorisation is marque-specific. A workshop approved for Mercedes-Benz is not automatically approved for Porsche.
- What paint system do you use, and is it approved for my marque? The system, the mixing bank and the technician training all form part of an approval.
- Where will the blend end? A specialist will name the panel and the body line. Vagueness here is the warning sign.
- Do you recalibrate ADAS after refinishing sensor-adjacent panels? On a car built after roughly 2018, this should be an automatic yes.
It is also worth knowing where you stand with your insurer before you need to. Many comprehensive policies include choice of repairer, and since December 2023 insurers have been required to disclose financial relationships they hold with repair businesses at policy and claim stage. Sometimes, but the decision is made by measurement rather than preference. A poor one will, because it is detectable: paint depth readings, colour variance under different light and overspray on adjacent surfaces are all things an experienced buyer or dealer looks for. Can you match paint on a metallic, pearl or matte finish exactly?
On metallic and pearl finishes, yes, using spectrophotometer readings, manufacturer variant data and a verified sprayout before any paint reaches the car. Matte and satin finishes are more restrictive because they cannot be polished, so the repair has to be right off the gun and is usually taken to a full panel.
Should I try a DIY scratch repair kit on a prestige car first?
Touch-up pens and abrasive compounds carry real risk on a luxury finish. Compounds remove clear coat you cannot replace, and touch-up paint applied over a scratch that has not been properly prepared usually has to be removed before a proper repair can begin, which adds cost.
